Steven read History at Reading and Theology at Oxford, and did his teacher-training at Cambridge. He was awarded the National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2005.
He was ordained in 1984 and spent most of his professional life in education. He served as a Chaplain, Head of Department, Housemaster, Deputy Head and Head in various schools in the independent sector. From 2003 to 2006 he was Senior Provost and Education Officer for the Woodard Schools – a family of Anglican schools in both the independent and maintained sectors. He has considerable experience of school governance in both sectors, and served as an inspector for ISI (the Independent Schools Inspectorate) and for SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools).
Steven retired from full-time employment in May 2019, after six years as Residentiary Canon for Education at Newcastle Cathedral.
