Winner of 2024 Pele Trust Geordie Banger Competition
Overview
Earlier this week, Freddy Holden (Year 3, Ponteland Primary School) and his friend Oli Beattie had the amazing opportunity to visit the Geordie Banger HQ in North Shields. Freddy, the winner of the 2024 Pele Trust Geordie Banger Competition, came up with the idea for the St. James’ Pork Sausages—inspired by his love for Newcastle United!
Freddy’s creative flavour choices included:
- Leeks – representing the colour of the pitch.
- Mustard seeds – resembling mini footballs.
- Garlic – for its anti-inflammatory properties that St. James might have used "back in the day"
David and Vin McDonald, the generous owners of Geordie Bangers, gave Freddy and Oli a behind-the-scenes experience. They made the first batch of St. James’ Pork Bangers—adding the seasoning, wrapping, and labelling the very first pack. To top it off, they even cooked some for everyone to try, and we all agreed they’re bound to be a hit across all Pele Trust schools when introduced in the new menus after the February half-term.
Both boys went home with plenty of Freddy's creation to share with family, and we’re thrilled to announce that St. James’ Pork Sausages will soon be available to buy online nationwide and at Geordie Banger market stalls and retail outlets throughout the year.
This annual collaboration between Pele Trust and Geordie Bangers is quickly becoming a favourite event for our students. We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings!
